Research On Sexuality Education And Teaching For Adults With Intellectual Disability

Nowadays, there are 11500 ID people aged from 16 to 35 stay in 241 Sunshine House (including 51 Sunshine Factory) in Shanghai. They are on the stage of ready for marriage with intensive curious to sex and real needs. The Sunshine House also provides them more chances to interact with people of opposite sex by placing them in an inclusive environment. However, lacking of sexuality education and the limitation in intelligence and social adaptation makes it an urgent and ubiquitous problem.Based on the interview and survey of 124 stuff works in the sunshine house and 29 ID adults and their families, this research has found that the ID adults have sexual needs or some relative actions and the demands of receiving sexuality education. Their family members and stuff hold the positive attitude towards the sexuality education for ID adults. However, they still dodge in their action. Although the ID adults are in need of wedding and other knowledge related, family members and stuff are not supportive enough in the question of wedding and giving a birth to baby. There are discrepancy on choosing the contents of sexuality education between family members, stuff and ID adults.According to the result from previous survey, some proper contents were chosen for the following sexuality teaching, including sex physics, sex psychology, and sex ethics. 29 ID adults were taught with the materials and the teaching effect was evaluated. The result found hat sexuality teaching helps the ID adults to get the knowledge, while the maintenance of the effect was not so satisfactory, which calls for a long term attention.Finally, based on the research result, suggestion has been given, which focus on the reinforcement and systematization of the sexuality education and teaching for ID adults according to their needs.
