It is widely recognized that listening ability plays a crucial part in English learning. But people didn't realize it until the 1950s. People have paid more attention to listening study since then. In senior schools in China, listening teaching had been totally neglected in English teaching before listening became a testing item in National Entrance Examination for College. The problems in English teaching in China have been that, after studying English for over ten years, students can't understand what foreigners say or talk to them. Though listening teaching is paid more attention to, listening teaching in senior schools in China is still at a stage of research. The methods and results of listening teaching are not satisfied. In a sense, ineffective listening teaching is one of the reasons for students' low listening ability. How to promote students' listening ability is a task worth all English teachers'efforts.The thesis analyzes listening problems the senior school students have and proposes ways of tackling them. The whole thesis is divided into six parts.Chapter One is the introduction. It illustrates the importance of listening ability and current situation of listening teaching in classroom English teaching in Chinese senior schools. It points out the practical significance of the research we have in listening teaching.Chapter Two states the theories related to listening. Some linguists think listening comprehension is an active process. In the process, listeners predict what will be said and confine their predictions with relevant background knowledge and contextual information. The theory has become a guideline to listening teaching.Chapter Three is about listening problems that senior students have. The writer made a survey to 546 students in three Guangxi rural senior schools by questionnaires in order to find out the existing problems. In the survey, some existing problems that we have found are: pronunciation, grammar, words, cultural background and psychological problem etc..Chapter Four is about some suggestions for the students in Guangxi rural senior schools. It proposes some ways that are Improving the pronunciation recognition ability, expanding cultural background knowledge; enlarging vocabulary, cultivating good psychology and paying attention to teaching grammar knowledge etc. to solve the listening problems described in Chapter Three.Chapter Five puts forward a kind of listening teaching model in the new curriculum. It consists of three stages, namely pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening stages to improve listening teaching, analyzing the aim to be reached and the tasks in each stage.Chapter Six draws a conclusion of the thesis and points out some limitations in this research.Though there exists some limitations and further study is needed, the paper gives some implication to teachers for the listening teaching in high schools in Guangxi rural areas.
