On Moulding Contemporary University Students' Sound Character

The development of contemporary society is in a fast way. Everything is changing -not only science and technology but also people's lifestyle and concepts are changing quickly. These changes have brought about great impact on college students' mental and physical well-being and their character, and some even have resulted in defect in students' character. But the moulding of students' sound character is the corner-stone to realization of their life goals, vital to their overall development and is one of the goals for institutions of higher education to develop modern talents. As future owners of 21st-century society, the well-being of college students is the key both to their own growth and the progress of whole society. So university time is the important period to mould students' character because their character has not finally set. So the colleges and universities should realize that it is an important mission to mould students' sound character, taking advantage of this prime time, exploiting various resources and ways and being actively engaged in this mission.This thesis starts with a general concept, then expounds the modes and features of sound character, and next analyses the significances of moulding college students' sound character that are the need of our country's development and construction, the solution to the character crisis caused by social changes, the objective need of students' physical and mental development and the guarantee for students' intellectual development. In the following chapter, the thesis explores the existing problems and causes in students' character development: first, the negative effect of marketing economy; second, the impact of cultural conflict; third, the colleges' and universities' negligence of character development; fourth, the negative effect of family education; fifth, the loss of self-discipline in morals.In the final part of the thesis, the author puts forward the goals and principles for moulding students' character. The character development is a systematic project in which the institutions of higher learning should play the dominating role to strengthen character education, to coordinate the functions between family, society and school, to actively hold up excellent teachers as the character model, to enhance the building of campus culture, to push students' self-improvement, to improve the psychological intervening mechanism for students' well-being, to promote arts education and to create good conditions for students' sound character development. In all, the colleges and universities should strive for students' overall development.
