The 21st century is an era of knowledge and economy, characterized by innovation and application of knowledge. With the developing of science and technology, competitions all over the world are becoming more and more acute and ferocious. Therefore, the power of a country is more and more dependent on the quality of its work force, which should be well cultivated. Nowadays our government has enacted the new Program of Reform in Basic Curriculums Education , which points out that the reform should change the traditional learning style. That means a great change relative to the obsolete mode of over-emphasizing passive learning, mechanical training and studying by rote. One of the key concepts of the new program is about adopting the exploring teaching insteading of the traditional forms of teaching. Basing on actual questions related to the teaching, it means that students carry through inquiry learning purposefully and independently under the teacher's organizing and guiding, and then promotes the development of students' ideation level, enhances the abilities of students to solve actual questions with knowledge and improves their scientific qualities.Basing on the concept, this paper did some studies on the basic types of inquiry teaching and teaching design, aiming at providing some theoretic and practical suggestions and guides for chemistry teaching staff in carrying through the inquiry teaching and teaching design.This paper was divided into six parts. In the first part the questions were brought forward . The meaning of executing exploring teaching during middle schools teaching were pointed out, so were the studying contents and methods of the paper.The second part of the paper is theory discussion for the inquiry teaching. The concepts, essence, characters and the base of the theory for the exploring teaching were expounded in detail, so were the characters for the inquiry teaching in chemistry.The third part and the fourth part are the most important part of this paper. According to the 5 open degrees of the inquiry teaching, the third part discussed that the inquiry teaching can be divided into four basic types, which are close inquiry teaching, semi-close inquiry teaching, semi-open inquiry teaching and open inquiry teaching. The usage of these types is not single or fixed but is flexible and various, which should adopt different types considering the different contents of inquiry teaching and the different levels of cognizant abilities of students.The fourth part is about the design of inquiry teaching, including the principles, teaches and practical examples of design in inquiry teaching. The design of the goals, contents, question situations, activities, organization and appraisal of the inquiry teaching are all discussed in the second section of part Three. This section has pointed out the principles and the methods of a design, which are advantageous to design ample and colorful courses, to inspire students with enthusiasm, to enhance the comprehensive abilities of students, to cultivate the innovate spirit and practical abilities through inquiry design.The fifth part is concerned with the evaluation of the inquiry teaching design, including the evaluation types, evaluation principles, and evaluation plans, aiming at providing helps for chemistry teachers in carrying through the evaluation of the inquiry teaching design.The designs and the practices of exploring teaching were combined in the last part of the paper. According to the teaching experiments and questionnaires done in the teaching experiences, it was proved that the types of exploring teaching and the designs of teaching projects were reasonable, practicable and advanced.
