| The spirit of university is that which makes a university . Guided by dialectical and historical materialism, this paper, by means of documentation, historical and comparative analysis, explores the connotation, features and functions of university spirit as against the western and Chinese history of university spirit. It then analyses the causes for the crisis confronting university spirit now, and puts forth some particular ways to the revival of university spirit of China.The main ideas of this article go as follows:1.The spirit of university is what bestows life and energy upon university. It is a kind of campus culture that reflects the school's conventional ideology, social status, social interaction, mental outlook of the students and teachers, ethos, and identity. This culture encompasses humanity, truth-seeking spirit, freedom spirit, Zeitgeist, skepticism and enterprising spirit. University spirit features self-independency, uniqueness, inheritance and progress. It may be directing, encouraging, nurturing and cohesive in light of function.2.The crisis confronting Chinese university spirit lies in personality, status and morality. The causes hereof are found to be the limitation of national system, culture and social influence, the popularization of higher education, profit- and technique- orientation, the alienated relation between teacher and student, and the homeliness of the president.3.The university spirit of China mainly involves the spirit of science that seeks truth, the spirit of humanity that promotes freedom and democracy, the spirit of open that is encompassing, the spirit of innovation that hails the time, and the spirit that extols rule and moral. To resuscitate university spirit is to: i. in principle, lead the whole country on the progressive track, promote academic freedom and stick to the human orientation, and ii. In methodology, reconstruct the concept of university spirit, improve the quality of teacher, and perfect the regulations of university.
