It is well known that there are many factors influencing foreign language teaching and learning. With the increase of exchanges between China and Western countries resulting from the reform and opening to the outside world, people have come to find that due to the lack of understanding of the Western culture, "culture shock" or "culture conflict" often arises when Chinese people communicate with Westerners, which leads to our realization that the foreign language teaching with the pure linguistic form as the center cannot meet the requirements of social development any longer. Since the early 1980s, compelled by the experience of too many "culture conflicts", scholars have paid more attention to the relationship between language and culture, and the influence of culture on the foreign language teaching. The newly-revised English Curriculum Standard for Senior Middle School students gives a comparatively clear interpretation on the communicative principle and the relationship between language and culture in English teaching. This thesis mainly deals with the definition and the necessity of culture teaching, the relationship between the language and culture, the demands upon the students' awareness by the newly-developed syllabus for high school English, a survey of culture test among the students in high schools, and how to build the students' culture awareness in foreign language teaching. This thesis simultaneously discusses the techniques of culture teaching, trying to present many examples to show how to make full use of cultural information on the use of textbooks to input culture in the EFL classroom high schools.
