How to study the English language efficiently and how to improve the language ability have drawn wide attention among students, parents as well as English teachers. One's language ability decides whether he or she can be admitted by a good university to study further or obtain a good job to create a better life in the future. In the practice of language teaching the author finds some students make great efforts to learn English but achieved little. This doesn't only make them feel frustrated at learning the language but also affect their overall intellectual development.There are many factors which can make trouble for the students in learning English. Besides the physiological ones, more of the factors are concerned with the students' psychological aspect, teachers' teaching tactics as well as the modes of ability cultivation. And the influence of the latter ones is giving rise to wide public concern.This thesis fully describes the development of theories of transfer in learning while extensively expounding the styles, features of these theories and their impact on education. With the fundamental idea of improving students' transfer ability in learning English, the thesis also clearly points out the status that learning transfer ability weights in one's study. In the course of writing the thesis, the author did a survey concerning the Senior Three students' English learning to reinforce the point of view, and having referred to high school students' attitude towards language study in this survey, the author analyzed the elements affecting the students' use of language learning strategies, thus disclosing the importance of cultivating transfer ability in English teaching.The purpose of the thesis is to find out the factors which affect students' learning transfer ability by means of doing a survey about students' learning strategies. Based on the idea, certain reflection upon the cultivation of learning transfer ability in high school English teaching is made and relevant teaching strategies and methods are put forward.The thesis also brings up the idea that to meet the needs of the educational reform, high school English teaching should lay more emphasis on cultivating students' autonomous learning and perfecting their learning methods, thus making them better their language study, master scientific language learning strategies, and finally improve their language learning transfer ability to make good preparations for their life-long education.
