As we enter the 21st century, English, as a tool of communication, plays a more and more important role in our daily life. As for senior high school students, how to improve English reading ability tops their learning list. This thesis reports an investigation into the existing problems and discusses some ways to improve the effectiveness in reading classes in senior high schools. Through a qualitative research, the author finds three problems: students'lack of motivation, inadequate teachers'instruction of reading strategies and inappropriate designing of reading activities. The study focuses on how to solve the problems based on task-based teaching methodology. The main body of this thesis consists of five chapters. The introduction chapter provides some background information and lists the current problems. Chapter Two describes a general research review of reading models, motivation, reading strategies, task-based teaching methodology and teenagers'learning traits. Chapter Three recommends pedagogical implications in reading classes in senior high schools. In Chapter Four, the author carries out the quantitative and qualitative research, collects the data and analyzes them by doing the experiment in two classes. Chapter Five draws the conclusion and points out limitations of the study and calls for further studies in senior high schools aiming to help English teachers in senior high schools improve effectiveness in teaching reading.
