| The analysis of categorical data (or qualitative analysis) is to be aimed at the analysis for the"nature"of the object of study. Concretely speaking, by using generalization and deduction, and by processing the data in hand, it recognizes the real nature and reveals the inside law. The qualitative analysis is always used to analyze the influence among things, mainly to answer the question about"yes or no"or"have or have not". When we want to recognize some objects, we have to recognize all nature of them first in order to distinguish them from others. So the qualitative analysis is a most basic and most important analytic process. In accordance with the scientific process of recognizing, any analysis always starts with the analysis of the difference of"quality", and then turns to the analysis of"quantity", at last gets a more reliable result. Recently with the science and technology developing, the sporting analysis has got more and more attention, and the statistical tool has been used widely in this field. Some problems that quantitative analysis can't solve have been solved through qualitative methods, and the latter have become favorite methods adopted by sporting statisticians. The purpose of the essay is to explore the use of qualitative methods in the field of basketball games. In the third chapter of this paper, a 4-way cross tables will be generated first, which will show the effect on the distribution of the frequency from the four variable; secondly the log-linear analysis is expected to show the concrete effect on the distribution of the frequency from the variable based on the result of the first step; and last, logistic regression will be used to analyze the data by introducing some new variable. We hope to analyze different effects upon the game result from different players in the same team. These three steps are coherent and consistent. At last this essay will give some suggestions about how to use the qualitative analysis in sports and some other fields.
