The purpose of this study is to do research into whether teaching lexical chunks can improve the rural students' listening.Listening is important to verbal communication; on the other hand, it is a necessary channel to obtain new knowledge and information. However, students' listening ability, especially in rural Senior Middle Schools, is far beyond what is expected. In order to solve the practical problems, optimal approaches for listening need to be explored. Therefore, the studies on the lexical chunks are discussed. To have a deep understanding of learning and teaching situation, questionnaire has proved that learners are increasing their awareness of lexical chunks, but the teaching methodology, to some degree, could not adapt to the new change and need.In order to prove the assumptions proposed above, the author conducted an experiment on the effectiveness of teaching lexical chunks. A total of 94 students from Class 11 and 12, Grade One of Putian Technology Middle School participated in the study. The experiment uses the counterbalancing tests. That is, Class 11 was taught by lexical chunks while Class 12 by individual words before they were required to do Listening Passageâ… . Then, Class 12 was taught by lexical chunks while Class 11 by individual words before they were required to do Listening Passageâ…¡.The results proved the assumptions mentioned above correct. These findings show that teaching lexical chunks can facilitate the students' listening ability and we also draw the conclusion that lexical chunks can facilitate the students' retention.
