Vocabulary is central to language and is the base of communication. High school teachers begin to pay more attention to the vocabulary teaching. However, they still teach vocabulary in inefficient ways. Teachers always ask the students to remember vocabulary by themselves. The students always remember them by rote repetition. So they forget them easily soon. The students can't master the vocabulary well. Teachers need to help the students retain words to reduce the overload of memory of vocabulary. The theory of information processing offers a good solution. Based on the theory, the writer proposes a deep level of vocabulary association processing strategy and discusses how to put it into practice. The writer divided the vocabulary association into three kinds: semantic association, word formation association and collocations and lexical phrases association. They are based on the depth of word processing, so they can keep a longer memory than rote repetition. To testify the necessity of the selected topic, the writer carried out a vocabulary test on the experiment subjects before the teaching experiment began. The finding showed that the students failed to grasp the vocabulary that had been learned. A questionnaire was organized at the same time, which showed that the students remembered vocabulary mainly by rote repetition. The experimental subjects were Senior Two students from one class. They were taught by using vocabulary association processing in vocabulary teaching. The strategy turned out to be effective four months later. The strategy helped teachers improve their vocabulary teaching. Above all, it can help students master vocabulary effectively and clear away the main obstacle in English learning. Due to the limits of the writer's theoretical knowledge and actual operational ability, the research remains to be improved and perfected.
