The aim of learning a foreign language is to communicate. Since the 1980s, the adoption of reform and open-door policies has boosted English language in China. The four basic skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing have been greatly improved on the part of Chinese students. However, these skills have not developed at the same rate. For the majority of students speaking remains the most difficult skill to master. They demonstrate their weakness in the ability to communicate orally in English even after six to ten years of study at school. What accounts for this inability? Is it due to the way in which English is taught? Or is it rather that the students do not practice much? Or is it a lack of an English-speaking environment that explains this problem? Such questions are what originally interested me and consequently prompted me to conduct the present research. Based on the sampling investigation and analysis of Senior One students in Luojiang middle School, the author has studied Chinese middle school teachers'and students'current problems in speaking teaching and learning and put forward that the lack of speaking strategy is an important reason for students'poor speaking ability and studying speaking strategy and training is an effective way to improve speaking ability.
