The Optional Course first appeared in the USA 200 years ago. But it was not until the 1980s that China started the course. During the first years it was neglected by most schools due to China's testing system. In 2003 China Ministry of Education issued "the National English Curriculum Standards", in which the Optional Course is demanded, aiming at carrying out quality education and creating more chances to practise English.In the background of Curriculum reform, Education theorists are more concerned with Optional Course. Also, the Optional Course in the standards is supposed to motivate students' interests in learning English and provide more chances for their personalized development. English Optional Course has bocome more and more important.This essay focuses on English Optional Course. The School Curriculum which is made up of Optional Course and Compulsory Course has been very popular in the world. The theories of Multiple Intelligences set up solid foundation for further research and analysis of this essay. The author of this paper does researches on the implementation of Optional Course in a senior high school and find out the problems in using it. On the bases of these researches, the author would be able to give some valuable advice on the area.The main body of this essay consists of three big parts. This first part is the summary of research on senior high school elective courses implementation, including the definition, and characteristics of Optional Course, the current status of the implementation of Optional Course in senior high schools at home and abroad,also the problems of the implementation of Optional Course in domestic senior high schools. The second part is the analysis of English curriculum standards. In this part, the author analyzes the module teaching, the credit system and the personalized teaching in English curriculum standards. After having introduced the people to be done research on and the way of doing the research, the author deals with the data and figures which got from questionnaires and interviews in the last part. The last part also gives some suggestions on the implementation of elective courses. The introduction part introduces the purposes and reasons of doing this research and the appendix part show the outline.
