English Press Reading And Senior English Reading Teaching

It is well known that reading is of decisive importance in English learning. English syllabus for senior high school takes reading ability as the first priority in four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. How to improve reading ability is a goal for language learners.English newspaper reading is an effective approach to improve students' reading efficiency. Compared with the textbook, English newspapers have many advantages. They have new contents plentiful amount, various articles, and interesting stories. They are closed to life and in fashion. Using them as materials in reading classes can provide enough materials as an after-class reading materials to satisfy the demand of students in different levels and can help build up self-confident and arouse students' interest in learning English. .The theoretical basis of English newspaper reading is humanism, which emphasizes the learner-centered training of skills and abilities in English teaching. We also examine the process of reading comprehension in English newspaper reading comprehension, and we'll focus on psychological process of reading comprehension and strategies for English newspaper reading comprehension. All of these are in accordance with the of the National Standard of English CurriculaIn detail, the thesis aims to investigate: (1) What problem exists in reading teaching? (2) Does English press reading help students better in their language learning? (3) If yes, to what extent do the reading activities help their language learning? If no, what are the reasons? In order to find answers to these questions, research instruments----questionnaire was administered to the subjects, interview and test were carried out.The findings of this study are: (1) Both teachers and students focus more attention on knowledge from textbooks than on extracurricular information. (2) English newspaper reading improves a great deal in teaching reading, which is very necessary and important in reading skill training and cultivating reading habit for higher-grade students to further studies. Newspaper reading activities should be promoted in teaching of the reading to train students' ability of all-round application of the language efficiently. Some recommendations based on the findings are provided for further studies.
