This study first provides a brief introduction about the teaching of English as a foreign language in senior middle schools. It sets out from the theories of modern linguistics and psychology to expound "contrastive analysis" and then points out that contrastive analysis is an effective method for teaching English in senior middle schools in China. Based on personal experience in the field and the outcome of surveys of both teachers and students, the author presents the readers with the current situation of the application of contrastive analysis in the practice in English teaching. Besides, sufficient and sound examples are given on how to implement contrastive analysis to eliminate the interference from native language and improve the efficiency of English teaching.The paper is divided into five chapters.The first one clarifies some definitions, pictures roughly the present situation of English teaching in middle schools and then discusses the role played by our native Chinese language in various teaching methods and some practical principles of Contrastive Linguistics.Chapter two briefly expounds transfer, which forms the psychological foundation of contrastive analysis. It shows that contrastive analysis works well in reducing interference from the negative transfer of the Chinese language in English teaching and learning. This part further explains the concept of contrastive analysis, describes its development, modes and the significance of the research .The third and fourth chapters, which serve as the essential part of the thesis, focus on the implementation of English-Chinese analysis in English teaching in middle schools.
