In China the English teaching system has been perfecting all the time. In recent years, elementary education is stressed to face the 21st century. Education for all-round development and innovation are both promoted in theories and practice. English social functions are strengthened and the consciousness of using languages is raised. So the teaching of listening in junior high schools becomes an important and urgent issue.As the reform of the systems of the entrance exams to senior high schools and to universities, listening is added to the English tests. It means the ability of listening gains an important position in language learning. It reflects the turning from the"exam-oriented education"to"Education for all-round development and innovation"in junior high schools. Therefore, it is of vital importance to study how to develop the students'listening ability and how to teach well in listening classes.Integrating with teaching practice, this paper investigates into the factors which influence the students'listening practice by way of a questionnaire and interviews. The factors include language knowledge, the interference of mother tongue, cultural knowledge and psychological factor. Meanwhile, the problems existing in the teaching of listening are reflected, which include neglecting the cultivation of the students'listening techniques, neglecting the global understanding of discourse, neglecting the purposiveness of listening practice, neglecting the students'emotion involvement and strategies. This paper also explores the solutions to the problems, such as establishing necessary norm listening practice in junior high school classroom teaching, designing reasonable teaching steps and stimulating the students'enthusiasm in learning English etc.This paper explores the mode of the teaching of listening in junior high schools for the purpose of grasping the substantive characteristics of the new class, and attracting the teachers'attention to it, so as to initiate a new world of teaching listening in junior high schools.
