According to the contextual cognitive theory, in classroom teaching, the relation between the teaching content, students' life, modern society and technical development of science and technology should be strengthened, students' interest and experience should be considered, students' initiative should be motivated, and their cognitive and non-cognitive quality as well as their psychological ability should be developed. Therefore, the improvement of teaching principles and methods becomes an urgent matter. In order to overcome the cramming teaching method, the author probed into contextual teaching and has achieved some good results.Contextual teaching is a teaching approach by which, with the teaching requirements, teacher sets some contexts appropriate to the teaching content to get students' emotional experience involved in and let them participate actively and communicate cooperatively in class activities, so as to make what they've obtained internalized and their psychological ability developed harmoniously.This thesis sets the research orientation on the basis of introducing the history and present progress of this approach.After inqiring into some certain theories about contextual teaching, the author defines the significances of it: (1) fully reflecting the conception of new curriculum; (2) reinforcing the practical use of descipline knowledge; (3) bringing out the centered play of students and guiding play of teacher; (4) assessing students all round.Through practice, the author suggests some ways of setting contexts in teaching: (1) beginning with the link of science and social life; (2) beginning with the researches and creativity in chemistry experiments; (3) beginning with the historical materials of chemistry. And, in accordance with this new teaching approach, the author raises some assessing criteria for teaching: (1) teacher's assessment; (2) the assessment of teaching procedures; (3) self-assessment.In order to make this research more directed and effective, the author has designed A Survey on the Present Conditions of Chemistry Study in Senior Middle School. Based on the findings in this survey, the author picks the senior students in Class 3 Grade 2 in Lanzhou No. 2 Millde School as objects to carry out this approach. Getting evaluations from collegues and visiting students, the author finally drew these conclusions: (1) The setting of contexts in teaching can effectively motivate students' interest in learning chemistry and develop their sound personalities. (2) The setting of contexts in teaching is helpful for the practice of teaching objectives. (3) The setting of contexts in teaching is helpful to cultivate the awareness of life long study.
