Currently, to promote the abilities of the students' initiative in mathematics is the importance of the new curriculum. However, the study of mathematics' comprehension is an important way to help to develop students' those abilities. This study investigated 76 students who are from grade 1 and 2 of a certain junior school in Suzhou. It is about their understanding levels of mathematics reading as well as the existence barrier of understanding. According to this, it also discussed how to teach the junior students to understand mathematics while reading. This study showed that there's no statistically significant difference between grade 1 and grade 2 students in understanding. But in general grade 2 is better than grade 1. They can use the definition and the formula, which are provided in reading material to solve the related question. They can try to deal with some problems in new situations according to the ideas that the material offers. They have the ability of preliminarily analyzing and processing data.Students' major difficulties in math's reading comprehension are listed as follows: 1, understanding mathematical language difficulty, specifically including difficulty in understanding mathematical terms and sentences, in identifying mathematical graph information and algebraic expression. 2, Problem-solving strategies difficulty, including: difficulties in logical speculation, organizing questions reasonably, and Mathematics applying difficulty.3, Mathematical operational difficulties, including: difficulty in making graphics and formula.4, incorrect expressing 5, others including: lacking of background knowledge, misunderstanding. The findings of this study has following enlightens: to promote students' interests in mathematics, to train the students on the base of different levels of math understanding; to explore effective ways of reading; to construct the structural knowledge; to provide a general method of solving problems.
