A Study Of Task-based Language Teaching At Senior High Schools

The teaching aim of middle school is to help students acquire certain basic knowledge and skills of language, cultivate their feel for language and obtain the ability of using English properly. To achieve the aim, we teachers should follow the objective law of English teaching, and choose the scientific and suitable teaching approach. However, at present, English teaching in our middle school is mainly carried out in the traditional way. In the classroom teaching, lots of teachers still fill students with much more language knowledge, including vocabulary, and grammatical rules, but neglect obtaining the four basic skills. Although students master lots of vocabulary and can answer the grammatical questions, yet in real-life communication, they can't hear and speak. This teacher-centered approach cannot improve the students'communicative ability. So the teaching aim cannot be achieved in the traditional way. Accordingly, we have to select a teaching approach which is fit to students.At the beginning of this century, new basic education reform has been emerged in China. In the New National English Curriculum Standards (2001), TBLT (task-based language teaching) is the recommended foreign language teaching approach to English education in China. The introduction and recommendation of TBLT plays an important role in solving the problem that English teaching wastes too much time but produces little effect in Chinese foreign language teaching classroom. The thesis introduces the development process of TBLT in the home and abroad and the theoretical foundations of TBLT approach. The thesis analyzes the definition and the structure of TBLT and task classification, through the practical application cases of TBLT. It is hoped that the thesis can be helpful to the application of TBLT in Chinese middle school.
