Since the appearance in middle nineteenth century, American women's colleges have made much contribution for women's higher education, social equality and diversification of American higher education system. However, there are a lot of negative impacts, such as homosexuality, disability to communicate with men, and so on. Therefore, the scholars can't reach an agreement on the significance of women's colleges. It seems unnecessary for women's colleges to continue existing in modern society where men and women have had equal access to education, since the foundation of women's colleges is to win the education equality for women. Nowadays the competition for more students has become more and more intense. Women's colleges are in a disadvantage because of small scale and scare resources. Higher education institutions can learn a lot from women's colleges, such as how to better meet the education demands of women. In China the status of women in work and the professions has been enhanced since the opening-up and reform. However, the women's higher education is far lagged-behind. New ways must be found to educate women in ways that help them make the full contribution in the economy, without losing their feminine strengths. In this aspect, American women's colleges were thought to have made a particularly strong contribution. This thesis will tell you the history and development of women's colleges both in China and America, the relevant studies in America. A few cases are demonstrated to summarize the values of women's colleges. For a comparative study, chapter five concentrates on the differences of women's colleges in these two countries. The last chapter tries to figure out the trends of women's colleges in China through interviews and questionnaires.
