Under the present educational system, as the malady of examination-oriented education is quite obvious, quality-oriented education is urgently needed. At present, the study of learning strategies is becoming a hot topic among a growing number of educators. As a middle school teacher, the writer of this thesis finds it quite necessary to research into learning strategies so as to improve teaching and learning efficiency.Then what do we mean by learning strategies? They refer to all kinds of learning methods and steps that help students study efficiently; they are general global strategies or plans for learners to enhance their learning efficiency. They can be divided into cognitive strategy, meta-cognitive strategy and resource management strategy. The learners' pursuit of the highest efficiency calls for their use of learning strategies. Meanwhile, learners can master knowledge and skills by adjusting their learning styles flexibly.This thesis is intended to explore learning strategies and the effectiveness of their application to English teaching and learning in middle school. First, the thesis surveys the researches of learning strategies from the historical perspective and the status quo of studies of learning strategies at home and abroad before it states the necessity and importance of our making a further study of learning strategies. Next, the thesis expounds the basic theoretical foundation of learning strategies grounded upon Cognitive Psychology, the Theory of Multi-intelligence and Successful Intelligence, the Theory of Second Language Acquisition, and Task-based Teaching theory. Then, it discusses in detail how to apply appropriate learning strategies to teaching and learning English in middle school. Finally, the whole process of a teaching and learning experiment conducted by the author is described, and the findings are analyzed, which demonstrate the effectiveness of flexible use of the learning strategies.The thesis concludes that it is of practical significance to study and apply learning strategies to English teaching and learning in middle school. It points out that appropriately applying learning strategies to English teaching and learning in middle school can stimulate students' interest in and enthusiasm for learning and enhance their learning efficiency.
