| Reading class is always paid the most attention in ELT in China. Though teachers have spent plenty of time and energy in teaching English reading, the situation of students' reading performance and reading comprehension are not satisfactory. The author thinks there are following reasons:1) The teaching of reading overemphasizes the knowledge points of language. The teachers teach only vocabulary, language points and grammar while they overlook the instructions of the text analysis, as well as the guidance of reading techniques and methods.2) The cultivation of language ability is emphasized while the sense of language is neglected.3) Too much importance is attached to the result rather than the instruction or control during the reading process. There is a lack of analysis, instruction and control of the psyche and the specific methods in the students' reading process.4) The information the reading materials express is paid great attention to, rather than the importance of the cohesion of the text or the cultural background.5) Examination-oriented teaching based on a sea of exercises, instead of sentiments (like motivation, interest, volition, mood and character), is stressed.6) The guidance of teacher weighs more than the cultivation of the subjectivity and the humanistic spirits.In the practice of the ELT in the middle school, the author realize that the crux of the cultivation of the reading capacity lies in the guidance of the teacher as well as the students' reading and practice, that is, the students should go through independent reading practices under the instruction of the teacher, a comprehensive drill based on the purpose of application should be strengthened, so as to realize the goal of ELT-— emphasizing particularly on the building of students' reading capacity.
