This thesis intends to test and discuss the effectiveness of strategytraining in an on-going reading course. Previous researchers and studieshave emphasized the importance of reading strategies used by thereaders when they are interacting with a piece of written task. Readingis then viewed as a strategic interaction between the reader and the text.Different reading strategies are studied and described by a number ofresearchers who are interested in this area. And numerous researchesand studies have been carried out in the field of strategy training undera firm belief that reading strategies can be taught and practiced. Thisthesis discusses the effects and results of twelve-week inferentialstrategy training. Three questions are discussed in this study: first,whether the students' reading ability can be enhanced through theinferential strategy training; second, what types of questions areaffected most by the training; third, whether the strategy instructionmethod is acceptable by the senior high students in China.This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One is introduction, whichprovides the significance of the research and the structure of thedissertation. Chapter Two offers literature review of reading, readingstrategies as well as the previous research on the reading strategy training,which provides theoretical supports for this thesis.
