The present thesis is composed of five parts which are introduction, literature review, methodology, results and discussion, and conclusion. It is designed to investigate the effects of cohesive devices on second language (L2)/foreign language (FL) listening comprehension for middle school students. To be more specific, it is an exploratory study to find out if cohesive devices which we mainly describe are non-structural grammatical, lexical, and implicit cohesion devices affect middle school listeners' performance which includes the learner's listening micro-skills and their listening information processing through the investigation of three special questions by analyzing the questionnaire as well as the interview based on the listening examination designed for the participants who were 87 Senior One students including 45 females and 42 males in the present study. Our investigations indicated that cohesive devices had very strong effect on English Foreign Language listening. They could be employed as a guide to our EFL listening. But, due to various reasons, for example, small participants, there still existed with some limitations. In a word, the present study only attempted to do some research in this area for Chinese middle school learners. It was a tentative one, and there was still much needed to be investigated.
