American schools have restarted character education since 1980s.The ideas ofCharacter Education Movement have been more and more mature. The practice of thismovement has been more and more effective. The author wants to introduce theeducational ideas and practice of Character Education Movement to shed light on themoral education in China. The whole thesis is made of 5 parts:The first part is the introduction of the background of character education inAmerica. Character education had been the main focus of schools before 1950s inAmerica. From 1950s to 1970s, the traditon of teaching core values was in decline inAmerica. Since 1980s, character education has been the priority in American schools.Character education is showing up on the nation's radar screen.The second part discusses the main educational ideas of Character EducationMovement. It includes the definition of character and character education ,the principleof character education and the standard of effective character education.The third part concerns the practice of Character Education Movement in schools.It offers how schools and teachers conduct character education, and how parents andcommunity members are engaged in character education program.The forth part discusses the strength and weak of Character Education Movement.The last part is a summary of the light that Character Education Movement hasshed on moral education in China.Morden Chinese moral education studies need to relyon the great tradition of Chinese moral education and pay more attention on the studieson how to conduct moral education in schools.Schools need to give students moreopportinuties to apply those values in their real life.To have a more effective moraleducation,schools need to get the support of communities and families.
