In recent years, curriculum reform has become a fashion topic and evaluation is becoming more and more important. Formative evaluation , which is called process evaluation, was advanced by G.F.Scriven in his book The Methodology of Evaluation in 1976. After G.F.Scriven, Bloom was the first to introduce formative evaluation into classroom teaching. With curriculum reform development in our country, a high premium has been placed on formative evaluation.Due to the phenomenon that students polarization is serious in common senior high schools, formative evaluation has been introduced in process of senior English teaching and learning. According to the theory, students should be evaluated based on their characteristic, on condition that a variety of methods are adopted by teachers.Firstly, a series of data including learning interest, learning motivation, learning strategies can be achieved by communicating with students. Based on the information from questionnaires sent out , plenty of data have been analyzed so as to a plan about evaluating the students can be fixed.Secondly, all kinds of methods should be used to evaluate students. Classroom observation is a very important and useful way. Through classroom observing, the latest information from student's learning process can be got. Further more, senior high school students have the ability of self-evaluation, we may use the method of self-evaluation to make the students evaluate themselves and turn over to reflect on themselves. Dividing the students into groups and making the students evaluate each other in groups can make students find out their advantages and disadvantages . Moreover, in order to get more and impersonalinformation , the students' parents can be involved in the evaluation and they can evaluate and supervise their children. In addition , portfolio assessment ,in which students are demanded to collect all kinds of data about their English learning and sort out the data, is one of the typical methods of formative evaluation. Through the methods, we can find out the disadvantages and then feedback them to the students. The information can help students improve their English learning .Thirdly, through analyzing the effect of the methods, we can learn if formative evaluation that is put in force in senior high school is effective. Meanwhile, based on the information that we collect, we can find out a lot of problems and put forward some suggestions on how to settle them.At last, I hope the paper can offer some help and explore some new ways to the people who are researching and carrying out formative evaluation.
