Indeed, the traditional research on junior middle school English teaching ignored thelearning process, the dynamic role and the creativity of the students, and lacked the evaluationabout individual character, for the methods of assessments were unreasonably and uniform.The main aim of the evaluation is to select. On the contrary, the New Curriculum Standardsadvocated the formative evaluation , that is "to find a foothold somewhere in the learningprocess and to accelerate the development of the students' English learning". It can be provedthat the system of the formative evaluation was involved in almost all the aspects of thestudents such as their basic knowledge and skills, sensibilities, value view, learning processand learning methods, which can give rise to the teaching qualities. At the same time, theformative evaluation paid attention not only to the great improvement the students' madeduring the learning process, but also to the results of the feedback of the evaluation so that itenabled the teachers to completely put the teaching goals into effect and to supervise theteaching process simultaneously. In addition, the assessment method was not limited to thetraditional written model tests any more. Instead, it has moved towards "authenticassessment" or " performance assessment".From the theoretical and practical points of view, the dissertation have studied thepromotive effects of formative evaluation in junior middle school English teaching. It tracedback to the review of educational evaluation, the history of educational evaluation, the appliedstrategies and the reformation of the formative evaluation and the case study., it referred to theanalysis of the effects on focusing the learners' needs, the change of the teaching contents andthe choice of the teaching patterns with the deepgoing of the English curriculum reformationunder the New Curriculum Standards for English , based on the original formative evaluation,the students improved little by little. On the basis of reforming the English evaluation, it alsodiscussed how to carry out formative evaluation, which is helpful to discover the goal ofreforming and improving English teaching.The experiment indicated that the teachers' cognition towards the improvement of thestudents' learning was from arbitrary and blurred to systematical and clear through recordingand monitoring the formative evaluation data of the students, the teachers knew what thestudents need well and may create in thinking and think in teaching, so the teaching methodswere pertinent to be chosen, the teaching became lively, flexible and efficient, the ability toresearch has been improved as well, it promoted English teaching, the communicationbetween the students and the teachers, and the personalities and all-round development of thestudents which meant teachers evaluate the students of all aspects.
