The educational evaluation is one of the educational studies in modern education. It is animportant criterion to evaluate teaching and learning. The final purpose of the educationalevaluation is to foster students’ abilities. The National Curriculum Standards for Englishclassify the evaluation system into two types: formative evaluation and summative evaluation,pointing out that we should combine both to help students build self-confidence, promotestudents’ comprehensive skills and help teachers gain and make good use of the feedback tothe English teaching. Teachers reflect and adjust the English teaching by using formativeevaluation, promoting teachers to enhance their teaching effects. The New CurriculumStandard required an evaluation system which fits the quality-oriented education. The NewCurriculum Standard called for the idea that “the evaluation should be a combination offormative evaluation and summative evaluation, and the formative evaluation should be themain form of evaluation. The evaluation should focus on both learning results and learningprocess”.The purposes of this paper are to find out what are the ideas and advices of students whoare evaluated with formative evaluation and the impact of formative evaluation on senior highschool English teaching. The author based on the constructive theory, the multipleintelligence theory and the humanism theory to argue that formative evaluation is a better wayto enable students make more efforts in English learning with an experiment for the purpose.Meanwhile, the study also focuses on proving the formative evaluation can improve thestudents’ learning interests and learning attitudes. The author made a twenty-week studybetween two classes in Siping NO.1Middle School. One class is the experimental class andthe other is the control class. The text book is Students’ Book1and Students’ Book2whichare published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The author used theformative evaluation in experimental class and summative evaluation in control class.The author hoped to evoke all teachers to seek the combination point of formativeevaluation and summative evaluation, so that teachers can optimize the teaching process andenhance the two-way adjustment function of evaluation, that is to improve teachers’ teachingmethods and better students’ learning methods. Therefore, the teaching evaluation mayfurther play a role to provide feedback information, encouraging students’ learning interestsand self-study skill, enhancing learning enthusiasm and self-confidence. Finally,the authorhopes this study can help the classroom teaching get away from the examination-orientededucation system. But the study also found that there are some difficulties in implementing the formativeevaluation in senior high school and the study has some limitations.
