With rich content and various forms, the "general reading" which is aimed toexplore people's life potentials and realize their full development, can be said tobe a sort of reading teaching theory. It is not only an obvious expression of thebrand new teaching theory and teaching method conveyed by Chinese CourseStandards of full-time in Compulsory Education (the experimental draft) in 2001but an important proposition for the reform on Chinese new course readingteaching. This sort of reading opinion has now been paid attention to by the areaof Chinese education, where it is discussed from various aspects andconsidered doable either theoretically or practically. However, on the furtherstudy of basic connotation of this theory as well as its practical principles andstrategies, there is still a great deal of work to be done. By analysing from theaspect of theoretical construct as well as of practical exploration, this paper, onthe basis of active absorbance of certain theories and practical experience,attempts to make the reform on reading teaching break through and blaze newtrails.This paper consists of five parts. The first part presents the understandingof current situation of reading teaching today. This is the basis and prerequisitefor the implement of "general reading" teaching. To truly realize the modernconstruct of reading and reading teaching theory as well as the modeltransformation of reading study and reading teaching, a clear and profoundrecognition is necessary. This paper mainly examines and reflects on the currentsituation of reading teaching in terms of three aspects which are readingteaching's theory, aim and process so that the problems can be found out.The second part is the reflection on the main body of reading teaching. Interms of the special subject area of reading and reading teaching, the main bodyconstruct has not been really realized. Only by profoundly reflecting andcriticising the main body of the reading teaching can a real breakthrough bemade on its reform. The main conflict on the reading teaching is the debate onthe character of Chinese as a subject. A complete and dialectical understandingof the relation between "means" and "humanity" is an important prerequisite forthe true change of the idea of reading teaching. Teacher and student are twomain bodies of reading teaching. To further develop the reform of readingteaching, the common effort is needed from both teachers and students. Thereading teaching is of double characters which are entirety and singleness. Inthe circle of the whole and the part in Hermeneutics, how to reflect theconnection between entirety and singleness of reading teaching in a better wayis a question to be considered.The third part elaborates the basic theory of the "general reading" teachingand its value. The idea of "general reading" teaching is based on the theory oflife education, educational culture and all life education. It emphasizes the wholeunderstanding of reading teaching and gives prominence to students' culturalbackground accumulation and pays attention to the humanism influence ofChinese education. The practical value of the general reading teaching is mainlyconveyed as follows. The "general reading" teaching can be helpful to cultivatestudents' humanism feelings. It is of help to the formation of students' habit oflearning on their own. It can enhance students' informational accomplishmentand strengthen their cultural inside information.The fourth part elaborates the principle of "general reading" teaching.Regarding people as of basis is the basic value of this new course reform. The"general reading" teaching should pay attention to Chinese education's meaningas people's life activity and its value on the construct of people's spiritual world.The appearance of various centre angles of view embodies various teachingideas. The "general reading" require us surmount the opinion of centre, reallyupdate reading teaching idea and realize a model transformation. "To believeeverything in books is worse than to have no books at all". The "general reading"should surpass the traditional and passive receptive reading, really makeknowledge absorbed in a more lively way and realize students' self development.Studying all one's life is the survival concept of the 21st century and reading allone's life is surely to become people's spiritual need all life.The fifth part presents the implementary construct of the "general reading"teaching. Studying and probing into a sort of teaching idea should not only stayon the theoretical level but on the basis of theoretical study to probe into theconcrete implementary strategies and realize its practical value. The carryingout of the "general reading" should be put forward from four aspects which areestablishment of idea, fostering of interest, establishment of environment andimprovement of strategies. Among them, establishment of idea is theprerequisite and basis. Fostering of interest and establishment of environment isimportant condition. Improvement of strategies is key to implement.
