The purpose of this study is to probe characteristics of the self-organization in the middlegeography education and teaching based on the self-organization theory in this paper,especiallythe self-organizing course in harmonious development of cognitive structures of geography. Inorder to make the primary problems in contemporary geo-teaching and their origin clear,findout managing ways and means,and search for a new way of the middle geo-teachinginnovation.The cognitive structure of geography is a dissipative structure. So all the research of theconditions of forming the geo-cognitive self-organizing system, how the system to be openedand its opening scale and how to create conditions for self-organization can help us know whenthe process of the self-organizing course to happen and create the conditions for self-organizing.By making use of the synergetic method to study the principles of competitive, synergetic anddominating actions, and theory of the establishing order parameters, we can realize theself-organizing extent in the cognitive system of geography, and how to keep the self-organizingfull of energy. It tells us that we should establish some rules and adjust them with some statedparameters in the course of the geography learning, and then make geo-cognitive subsystemsinteractive and perform the order-parameter moving pattern, and then we can promote the wholecognitive system of geography evolvement.According to the ideas of Mutation, we may infer the probable route of this systemevolvement. The method of Hyper-cycle provides some means and ways of how to make a mealof the conditions of matter, energy and information in cognitive course of geography. Fractaltheory and chaotic theory can be used to study the complication of time and space questions ofcognitive systems of geography.By the contrastive teaching experiment between self-organizing means and orthodox teachingmethods, the level of geographical interest and original minds of geography have obviouslyincreased. Thereby, it comes to a conclusion that the means of self-organization learning is thebest one about the harmonious development of the geo-cognitive structure for students.There are some innovations in several areas in this paper:1. To study the self-organization characteristics of the mid-school geographical education andteaching based on the theory of self-organization;2. To study the student geo-cognitive structure based on the ecological theory;3. To make a phylogenetic classification of the geo-cognitive structure both longitudinaldirection and latitudinal direction;4. To give the Geo-cognitive Cellular Automaton theory;5. To give the conception of geo-cognitive entropy.
