With the reform of courses on elementary education coming into practice and the development of foreign language teaching, more and more foreign language teaching materials have come into the market. In this situation, teaching material evaluation becomes very important because it can not only offer the reference for the education administration to select teaching materials but also provide advice for the compilers to revise teaching materials. What's more, it can help teachers to adapt or adjust the materials in the course of teaching and give teachers teaching guidance and students a great help with their study.PEP New English Teaching Material in Senior Middle School has been put into experiment since 2003. By the year of 2006, it has taken the place of the old one completely. As the most widely used teaching material in senior middle school, evaluating its quality and value is of great significance.According to the core of the new curriculum reform, the material function and the subject character and by referring to the theory at home and abroad, the writer evaluates the PEP New English Teaching Material in Senior Middle School by using ten standards from five aspects and makes a questionnaire to the teachers and students.By evaluation and questionnaire, the paper draws a conclusion that the PEP New English Teaching Material in Senior Middle School has some advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are: the new teaching materials embodies the idea of human orientation;applies advanced teaching methods;the contents have universality and temporal spirit;the arrangement is flexible;the New Teaching Materials adds the contents and methods of assessment and highlights the dominants position of students in the assessment of teaching materials.The disadvantages are: the topic and text are mainly concerned with city life, which is far away from the students' life in the countryside;the tasks are too arduous to be fulfilled;the arrangement of some knowledge is unreasonable and the matching material needs further improvement.This paper also provides some advice for the teachers to use the New TeachingMaterial, such as dealing with teaching contents scientifically, arranging teaching order reasonably, and optimizing teaching methods.The evaluation to the New Teaching Material can help us judge its quality and value objectively and scientifically, and it may offer the reference for the writers and the users to make a decision.
