An Experiment Study Of The Effects Of Social Value Orientation And Resource Information On Public Resource Dilemma

Individuals in groups are often confronted with the problem of public resource dilemmas. Since 1980s,social dilemma, as a result of over-population, resource decrease and environment pollution, has attracted the attention of more and more researchers, such as sociologists, economists and psychologists. Nowadays, resource decrease problem has become the focus of many countries including China. So, it is especially important to conduct further study on this problem.This paper is organized with a lab experiment which examined the effects of social value orientation and resource information on public resource dilemma. In the study, we also measure individual's efficacy, fear and expectation. We study the effects of these factors through providing different resource information, and it is the embodiment of choice's strategy and adaptation. The results indicate:a) Different value oriented people have different cooperative behavior level. Pro-social oriented people are more inclined to cooperate, competitive oriented people are more inclined to compete in dilemma. And pro-social oriented people are more cooperative when given emergency information. Competitive oriented people are more cooperative when given loose information.b) Resource information style has a qualified influence on people's choice. Compared with the situation of generic information, subjects' cooperation is improved through providing loose and emergency resource information. Information feedback can reduce uncertainty effect in choice.c) People have different level of expectation, fear and efficacy when given different resource information. Individuals' efficacy is highest in loose information style, but for pro-social oriented people, this situation reduces their sense of emergency and encourages their free-ride behavior.d) Fear and expectation have significant effects on people's behavior. Both pro-social and competitive oriented subjects increase their harvest with their increasing fear and expectation, but they have different influencing format for different social value orientation's subjects.e) People's cooperation is accompanied with lower expectation level, stronger efficacy and lower fear, while competition is accompanied with higher expectation level, week efficacy and higher sense of fear. It indicates that different level of cooperation has different level of expectation, efficacy and fear.f) People's behavior trend is obvious different in different resource information situation. Their shared experience affected their subsequent expectation and behavior, all their choice issensitive and adaptive to situation.
