Along with our country's entry into WTO, English teaching plays an increasingly important role in the vocational and technical education. Great changes have been taking place in English teaching materials for the vocational and technical education. What compiling mode should the English teaching materials for higher vocational and technical education possess to meet the need of reform and development? This has been valued greatly by the vocational and technical education administrative sections and colleges, and has also attracted great attention of scholars and experts in English teaching in the field of higher vocational and technical education. And this is just the important subject that the writer exerts herself to study and deal with in this thesis.Under the guidance of some relevant second language acquisition theories, the thesis adopts the methods of the combination of theoretical discussion and current situation investigation of English teaching material reform in higher vocational and technical education to search for the theoretical ground for the compiling of English teaching materials for higher vocational and technical education, centering round the reform and development of English teaching materials for the higher vocational and technical education. And it attempts to set up a skill-oriented and content-based mode for English teaching materials. Therefore, the thesis elaborates from the four aspects: literature review of SLA, necessity of the reform and innovation of the English teaching materials for higher vocational and technical education, enlightenment and application of SLA theory in the innovation of English teaching materials and their compiling mode design.This thesis holds that SLA provides solid theoretical foundation for the teaching of English as a second language. A textbook is a materializedform of teaching and learning. So the teaching material- compiling should also follow these theories. Motivation is an important factor in L2 achievement. Optimal input occurs when the "affective filter" is low. And tiiere is a whole range of learner factors that potentially influence the way in which a L2 is acquired. These are the factors the compiler should consider in the compiling of teaching materials.The thesis makes a questionnaire and a case study for 20 vocational and technical colleges and 200 students. The investigation indicates that English has become an indispensable required course; However, variety and uncertainty exist in the current English textbooks for the students of the higher vocational and technical colleges; Hie contents and teaching forms in current teaching materials are in the inadaptable state; The students are in the lack of English integrated skills needed in the modern times. The current situation requires innovation and reform of English teaching materials and English teaching methods. The research shows that the reform and development of English teaching materials for higher vocational and technical education should embody the following basic principles and development orientation, that is, Dealing well with the relationship between the language foundation and its application; Focusing on the language proficiency; Improving the students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating; Breaking through the tradition and striving for innovation.Based on the above theories and investigation, we should select interesting teaching materials, make the teaching materials utilitarian, easy to operate and applicable to English teaching in higher vocational and technical colleges.This thesis designs a compiling mode of English teaching materials for higher vocational and technical education in three steps.
