Study on corporate social responsibility is long-standing. Scholars probe into whether corporation shall carry out social responsibility and its scope and limitations in a deep and thorough way. However, they do not pay due attention to behavior approach of corporate social responsibility. In western countries, to carry out social responsibility is a social behavior of value orientation for corporations which are economic organizations rather than economic behavior of instrumental orientation. However, with development of market economy, corporate behavior to carry out social responsibility has gradually become an economic behavior that brings maximum economic benefits to corporation, that is, behavior of instrumental orientation, and therefore brings about conflict between value and instrument in terms of business ethics. In the process of social transformation, the behavior that Chinese corporations carry out social responsibility transforms from value orientation to instrumental orientation as well. This transformation has not only positive significance but also negative impact, that is, it promotes corporations to carry out social responsibility, but it makes this become a mere formality and therefore affects social responsibility to be practically carried out. With Chinese social transformation as historical background, this paper reviews transformation of behavior approach of corporate social responsibility and makes an empirical study on Chinese corporate social responsibility. This paper accesses Enterprise A before transformation and Corporation T after transformation as individual cases.
