Educational researchers have made a thorough study on the evaluation of education, teaching and courses. They attached great importance to the feedback of evaluation to education and teaching, but haven't established a comprehensive evaluation system on student's foreign language learning. How to offer an overall and scientific evaluation on the learning procedures and results of junior school students in English learning and how to bring its functions of diagnosis , instruction, encouragement and advancing the growth into full play are what we have to face and deal with when we confront the current situation of education and examination systems in China.This thesis adopts a comprehensive approach to evaluating junior school student's English learning by combining formative evaluation with final evaluation. The author attempts to illustrate the effect of comprehensive evaluation theoretically and practically.It consists of four chapters. Chapter One is an introduction, including the statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, definition of learning evaluation and content of the thesis. Chapter Two discusses the theoretical foundations of comprehensive evaluation, the characteristics and principles of formative and final evaluation. According to the analysis of the two ways of evaluation, the study reveals the comprehensive way of evaluation can promote the language competence more effectively. Chapter Three is the description of the investigation process. A related experimental study and a questionnaire are carried outwith the combination of quantitative and qualitative study to prove the author's viewpoints. Chapter Four summarizes the findings and puts forward the problems that arise in comprehensive evaluation way.
