The self-controlling ability in mathematics study refers to that of students' self-motivation for high efficiency and success, and in particular, it means their ability during the entire learning process to have active attitude toward planning, testing, modulating and managing of their study activities, so that they can successfully achieve their study goals. Consequently, the self-controlling ability can be divided into three aspects: planning of their own learning activities in mathematics; scheduled testing and obtaining feedback of the process and the progress; modulating, adjusting and managing their mathematics study activities accordingly.Self-controlling ability displays itself in many ways. Basically it symbolizes a high level of a student's mathematical thinking ability. Based on the analysis of its basic scope and extension in mathematics study, both quantitative and qualitative investigations are conducted in the present study. In particular, two kinds of questionnaires are designed and used in the investigation. The study aims to reveal the characteristics of development of students' self-controlling ability, and to find out the relationship between one's comprehending mathematical concept and self-controlling ability.The current study reveals the basic law of the development of students' self-controlling ability. That is, it is a process that evolves from passive- control to active-control; that starts the development from single- direction to multi- directions; that progresses from inferior-control to advanced-control; and that undergoes the transformation from bewildering model to technical model; and that experiences the transfer from phase-control to all-course-control; and that progresses the transformation from particularity to universality such a series of basic characters. In contrast to the students with low self-controlling ability, the students with such fairlygood ability show considerable advantage in forming the mathematics concept and applying the concept to solve the mathematical problems.The research results presented in the dissertation further indicate that, in order to facilitate the development of students' self-controlling ability in mathematics study, it is necessary to systematically integrate the theories and to apply the theory in practice; it is important to motivate students' activity fully; it is essential to emphasize the education on sense and sensibility; it is advantageous to strengthen the education on strategic knowledge, and hence to help students gradually form the self-controlling tendency and eventually the habit; it is critical to expose the logic process of mathematical thinking; it is helpful to pay attention to students' self-evaluation, and so on. All of these proposed efforts significantly contribute to the formation of students' self-controlling ability in mathematics study.
