General secondary education at the end of Qing Dynasty was developing while the modernization of Chinese education was continually going deep. Modern high school originated from Europe where Capitalism appeared at first. General secondary education at the end of Qing Dynasty developed based on learning from western countries and Japan and using their experience for reference. On the basis of collecting the historical materials roundly and analysising, the dissertation introduces that the general secondary education was how came into being and developed in China. The dissertation discusses the developing process of general secondary education at the end of Qing Dynast from five aspects: the induction, the sprout, the establishment of general secondary education system and the development.China had formal school system including primary school, high school and college since high school appeared at the end of Qing Dynasty. Appearance and development of high school at the end of Qing Dynasty is an important symbol of Chinese education modernization. At the same time it promoted the disintegration of the feudal education system. Its appearance and development played an important role in disseminating natural sciential knowledge, changing and enlarging knowledge structure of Chinese people, turning the traditional education idea and the talent ideal.
