| This thesis takes the course of development of education studying in America as pulse. Commented the course of 20 years from 1909 to 1929 objectively, the thesis explains systematically the influence of the education of studying in America during the period of Late Qing and Early Republic on the modernization of the Chinese education. Summarizing the experience and lesson of this phase at the same time is to give lessons for the present education of our country.The education of studying in America stemmed from the Boxer indemnities' education, then established the Tsing-hua School as the special preparatory school before studying in U.S.A. The education of studying in America which took Tsing-hua as backbone promoted all kinds of education studying in America at public expense and at one's own expense. In the specific historical period at that time ,the education studying in U.S.A appeared some characteristics: First, students' selection and examination were regularized and institutionalized progressively; Second, the majors of studying abroad were mainly science and engineering, agronomy and medical science; Third, the students studying abroad accepted higher education abroad and they had strong patriotic enthusiasm and good style of study; Fourth, the female students studying in U.S.A increased day by day; Fifth, the source of students studying abroad are not balanced. Students of Guangdong , Fujian , Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces had comparative advantage, but there were very few students of remote areas.The characteristics of the education of studying in U.S.A made it have countless contacts with the education of China. The students going home had an far-reaching impact on Chinese education, which reflected in the following respect mainly: First, introducing advanced education thoughts and methods of the west and launching relevant experiments and reform; Second, reforming the old school education system and setting up new ones; Third, promoting the development of modern higher education; Fourth, launching educational practice and exploring the educationalpattern suitable for the Chinese actual conditions.These have promoted the process of the modernization of the Chinese education and made indelible contribution to Chinese modern education. But the education of studying in America during the period of Late Qing and early Republic which were restricted by realistic social environment, would have certain defects unavoidably. It also made some negative influence on the modern education in China, for instance, educational development's imbalance, staying the stage of imitation, overly relying on studying in U.S.A etc.Studying the phase of history and judging it objectively is to probe into the law and summarize the experience and is used by us. The education of studying in America in the period of Late Qing and early Republic not only have a far-reaching influence on the modernization of Chinese education, but also have a lot of enlightenment and lessons to present education of studying abroad. First of all , establishing good environment and system of studying abroad; Second, making the relationship between higher education and studying abroad in order; Third, dealing with the relation of Chinese and western culture correctly; Fourth, widening the channel of going abroad to study; Fifth, doing a good job of return of the students going abroad. |
