The habitat of Hui nationality in metropolis has recently drawn much attention. Namely Jamaat, one kind of special community exists as a "sub-society" in the "big-society" of metropolis. The Jamaat communities frequently appear in many big cities in China, however, using sociological method to study the Jamaat urban renewal problems through the view of planning is still a new topic in urban studies.The thesis takes the Niujie community of Hui Nationality in Beijing as case study of the urban renewal of Jamaat, firstly reviews the born and development and analyzing the characteristics of the special urban settlement Jamaat, and then expatiates on the problems and difficulties during current urban renewal of the double-identity object Jamaat, based on the research on different situations of the Niujie community before and after the big-scale reconstruction, finally raises the essentials of making of a good Jamaat, summarizing some basic rules from all the facts and problems, in expectation of bringing benefits to the ongoing renewal projects or actions in the wind.Based on the field survey, the thesis studies the typical case of Beijing Niujie through time and space dimensions; using sociological investigation methods, concerns aspects of both social structure and urban spatial structure; and utilizes urban planning methods to study Jamaat in urban social and spatial environment.In the process of Jamaat renewal, housing and commercial growth are tough issues but with most concerns of the public. These problems also accord with the difficulties and hotspots in the nationwide urban renewal as well as Jamaat renewal projects, which are two main topics that the thesis emphasizes on.
