Content: At present, the nationwide elementary curriculum reform is being carried. The function of education has been transformed from pure knowledge impartation to acquirement of both knowledge and abilities and skills, along with the formation of active learning attitude and proper values and concepts, understanding and experiencing the process and methods of learning, and helping students learn how to cognize, communicate, develop and survive, shape their self-esteem and ideal personality and develop both individually and socially. Assessment is part of geography curriculum standardized experiment, which will affect the progressing of the project. In a sense, the key to the success of geography curriculum reform is how reasonable the assessment is in order to achieve the aim of education. Therefore the assessment of students supposed to be reformed somehow.The purpose of the task is to theoretically and practically, change the belief that the function of assessment is only to discriminate and select students; change the belief that the content of assessment should be limited to the master of knowledge and skills, whileas evaluation of student's all-round development is neglected; change the belief that assessment should emphasize on generality and uniformity instead of individuality and pluralism; change the belief that assessment should emphasize on management neglecting feedback and agreement; change quantitative tests into qualitative description. Therefore, assessment should concerns with not only the results of learning but also the process of learning, students' emotion, attitude, behavior and change. Assessment should also combine quantitative and qualitative assessment and creat a motivative and stimulative system of assessment with students' individual advantages realized and confidence enhanced. With the help of the assessment, students can know themselves better and develop completely, actively and harmoniously.The tast is performed by research of documents. Considering the history of the development of geography learning assessment, analyzing modern educational thoughts and their influence on the concept of assessment, the task illustrates the scientific connotation and characteristics of progressive assessment. It develops the theory of geography learning assessment and has great theoretical significance. The task is also performed by research of behavior. Experimenting in several middle schools', new purpose and content of geography learning assessment which can develop students' abilities are set; some new assessment resources like specific geography problems, tests, growth documents;, test formulas, observation, authentic assessment, proficiency assessment and intergrated assessment, are researched; diversified operative methods are used. It shows creativity in assessment implementation and assessment methods. It also has practical value in solving the difficult problems met in the assessment implementation in the curriculum reform.
