Assignment is a kind of information which can reflect teaching effects, the causes of these effects and the related, teaching theory, After analyzing 327 copies of the assignment of 2003-year students from five local middle schools. The author studied the function, the disignment ,the types, the quality and the causes of history assignment,and discovered that at present the assignment in the schools in .Qilihe district is too simple in form and evaluation methoel. The function of assignment under the new courses has not been brought into play.The author believes that the causes of the low quality of assignment are as follows: low attainment of the teachers; common society indifference to the subject ; uneven level of the school management and evaluation systems. The research also shows that at present assignment is only used for strengthening history knowledge but not for revealing its more educational function. As history teachers, we should devote ourselves to the cource reform and promote the 'educational function" of history course in middle schools.
