The relation between language and culture has constantly been a hot topic for years. With our country's entrance to WTO, the globalization of economic and the appearance of the "global village", intercultural communication has become an integrated part of every people's life. To develop the intercultural competence should be based on the learning about the target culture and therefore, the introduction of English culture should not be questioned. However, for a long time, in our secondary English class, linguistics knowledge and competence have always been overemphasized while English culture neglected. Hence culture teaching and learning should be set as an important subject in secondary foreign language education.Whether is culture teaching in secondary English class being underway? How is it getting on? What problems exist in culture teaching at present? How will it be carried out in future? These are questions my thesis tries to explore.The thesis makes a tentative study of culture teaching in secondary English class by performing a questionnaire in different types senior schools in the city of Xianning and tries to draw the attention of the teachers, experts, educators, educational institutions and authorities concerning the culture teaching in secondary English class.The thesis first refers to related achievements about culture and language to seek out the theoretical basis and puts forward that culture teaching should become an integrated part in secondary English class and it is the key element to form the intercultural competence.Secondly, the thesis carries out a questionnaire about the culture teaching in Xianning. The results show that culture knowledge is deeply loved by students aswell as teachers. The worries lie in several aspects: teachers are poor at their culture quality; there are no available and systematic culture teaching and learning materials; the present teaching hours and NMET system restrict the culture learning; teachers' cultural consciousness affect students negatively; the motivation and limited time and energy of the students also result in poor culture learning.To solve the problem, the thesis analyzes the present situation and respectively gives some possible suggestions to the related teachers, educational training bodies, senior school authorities, textbook composers for further research.In the end, the thesis comes to the culture introduction to the secondary English class and argues for the contents and four different methods of the culture introduction. |
