In July 2001, the Department of Education issued "Criteria for the Course of Nine-Year Compulsory Education " (CCCNYCE). The implementation of CCCNYCE suggests that the all-round quality education has come to a new stage and that the educational reform centered on the reform of courses is making further developments. Teachers are participants as well as implementers. The function of the new concepts in CCCNYCE in the practice of the Chinese language teaching mainly depends on the transformation of the teachers' concepts, on the change of the roles and on the enhancement of qualities.The thesis deals with preliminary research on the problems of the role-change of teachers in the course development, of qualities required for the development of teachers and of other problems concerned in four chapters. Chapter One emphasizes role-change of teachers with CCCNYCE, pointing out that teachers of Chinese should make efforts to turn themselves from feeders of knowledge into guides for learners, from commanders of classrooms into equal consulters, from one-way passers of knowledge into mutually beneficial cooperators, from dull experienced teachers into creators in teaching. The next three chapters are the main parts of the thesis. On the basis of the agreement that multifarious qualities are required of teachers who teach Chinese, these parts are devoted respectively to three aspects: structure of knowledge, abilities of teaching and research, and moral qualities. Chapter Two covers the problem of connotation of the knowledge structure for Chinese teachers and the problem of how to improve the knowledge structure. It is stated that teachers of Chinese should have all-round cultural quality, with three-dimensioned developing structure of knowledge. In Chapter Three, two sections are given to expose enhancing teaching ability and researching ability. Only by creating and doing research in the process of teaching, can teachers of Chinese transform knowledge into wisdom, thus improving the quality of education and teaching. Chapter Four stresses the importance of moral education. It discusses briefly how teachers bring their personalities into full play and introduces tactics and methods in improving moral characters.Teachers are the key to educational reform. Nowadays, with the development of quality education and multiformity of course reform, it is foothold as well as the intension of this thesis to promote teachers of Chinese to have a good command of the connotation of CCCNYCE, change roles and improve qualities in accordance with the requirements of CCCNYCE.
