In the study of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, nothing has been discussed more and with less effect than the relationship between language and culture. As language always operates in a culture, the author believes successful teachers of foreign languages create learning environments in which they present the particular things that are accepted in the target culture. Then what about develop an effective Chinese language learning environment which combined with Chinese culture? When the idea comes, a concept of Tai Chi Quan reflected. The author has decade of researching Tai Chi and more than five years teaching experience of coaching foreigners to practice Tai Chi Quan in learning cultures of China—cultures that are historically and formally distinct from the cultural inheritances of most foreigners. So why shouldn't we take Tai Chi Quan into classroom, and design a particular teaching material for Tai Chi Quan? This is what we shall do here.Currently available Tai Chi Quan teaching materials concern only high level reading skill and mostly focus on Tai Chi Quan theories. When it comes to beginners, there are no published materials. At present the author is working on a Basic Tai Chi Quan teaching material for beginners of learning Chinese as a foreign language. While in the area of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the development of teaching materials is in the beginning stages of a long march toward the day when it takes full advantage of each available language pedagogy study and technological tool.The author tries to deal with either language or culture in a moderately competent way in the course of Chinese language learning, thinking a well designed text book will maintain instructional rigor without precluding opportunities to learn outside the formality of the classroom, and at the same time strive to equip learner with strategies for efficiently exploiting the extracurricular resources. The paper is intended to present this concept to an interested audience. The Chinese have a way of expressing this kind of brashness:pao zhuan yin yu (throw-bricks-attract-jade). In this emboldened spirit, we offer our unrefined suggestions in the hope that they will inspire loftier and more refined responses from our readers and colleagues.
