No matter how the time changes, text book is always the tool to firm the foundation of authorities. The content and the structure variation of the text books may reveal the influence caught by different foreign trends of thoughts on the cultural and educational society. Chinese is always one of the major courses, and the Chinese text books have been varied from different time in the history. This thesis is going to focus on the Chinese translates in the middle school text books in the Republic of China (1912-1949). By analyzing certain typical Chinese translates in the text books under the macroscopically consideration, the aim of this paper is to find out how and to what extent has the foreign trends of thoughts affected China in that period of time.The first chapter briefly reviews the alterations in curriculum regulations since the late Qing dynasty. China established its own first school system early in the Qing dynasty.The modern school system first showed in the 1920s, when the Chinese domestic society was influenced by Western Learning.After May 4th movement, rebels fight seesaw-battles with traditional forces. These conflicts give the rise to the appearance of foreign literature in the Chinese text books. The second chapter analyzes the relevance of the heat of studying abroad and the compilation of new style Chinese text books in middle schools. Meanwhile in this chapter the translation and introduction of foreign literature into China after May 4th movement will be introduced to form a base for the following analysis. The third chapter analyses several pieces of typical Chinese translates in middle school Chinese text books and try to prove if the translates matches the students'real life at that time.
