Research On Governance Structure Of Oxford University

Recently, there are several contradictions existing in governance structure of our university, such as the authority of decision-making dominated by the authority of administration, which block the development of university. Therefore, optimizing governance structure of university is the inevitable steps of the development of university. Although the conservation and the interior control governance mode of Oxford University are queried by the society in recent years, this mode didn't block the development of Oxford University. The questions such as what kind of interior governance structure the famous universities like Oxford University have in order to make them rank in the first class universities around the world and ensure and coordinate the benefits among the main bodies become the fain problem we should face when we want to further the research.By utilizing the methods of literature research, historical research, comparative research and case study and taking views from Politics and Education, this study investigate thoroughly the historical development and characteristics of governance structure of Oxford University. And then we can get the excellent mode of governance structure and apply its advantages to construct the university's governance structure with Chinese characteristics by combining the defects existing in the governance structure of our university.Based on analyzing governance structure of Oxford University, this paper is mainly divided into four parts, except for the introduction and epilogue.The first chapter describes the history of the development of governance structure of Oxford University. The progress of governance structure of Oxford University, which is a historical course, shows its characteristics and distinct inherit in different stages. Therefore, according to the approximately skeleton of the historical development of Oxford University, its governance structure is divided into three stages, and those are budded stage, developing stage and thorough stage. The aims of this chapter are review the changes and explore the evolutionary logic and basic rules of governance structure of Oxford University.The second chapter analyzes the actuality of governance structure of Oxford University. This chapter analyses its arrangement of governing body by combining the background, for Oxford University lies in the environment of society in the United Kingdom. By searching the official website of Oxford University, we can conclude that governance structure of Oxford University is mainly composed by Council, Congregation, Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Academic Divisions, whose arrangement and cooperation are the key points of this study.The third chapter analyses the characteristics of governance structure of Oxford University. By analyzing its development and structure, this chapter finds out its characteristics and summarizes them as four aspects. And those are that the charter is guarantee of governance in law, the collegiate system is the innovation of governance in system, governing by professors is the foundation of governance and sharing the authority of decision-making is the guarantee of democracy.The fourth chapter is the enlightenment on our university from analyzing the governance structure of Oxford University. Because comparative research is used in this study, this chapter looks forward to the trends of the university governance structure with Chinese characteristics by combining the problems in governance structure of our universities with the merits and value of governance structure of Oxford University.
