With the rapid development of social economy, the economic environment becomes increasingly complex, which requires citizens to improve their capacity to make economic decisions. In response to this requirement, schools must further strengthen economic education to improve the basic economic literacy of future citizens. This dissertation attempts to analyze the characteristics and essence of economic education in the U.S., compares the similarities and differences of economic education between the U.S. and China, reveals the rationales and practices which can be important references to China, analyzes the problems and disadvantages of the economic education in China, and tries to summarize some useful implication for the development of economic education in primary schools in China.The introduction chapter reveals the context and methodology of the research. It introduces the general idea about the study of economic education. The concept of "economic education" is also defined in this chapter. The main body introduces and analyzes the characteristics of economic education in American schools.The first chapter describes the historic development of economic education in American and different features in different period.The second Chapter analyzes the objectives and content characteristics of economic education in primary and secondary schools in the U.S. in detail. For example:the objectives emphasize on "rational choice capacity"; the objectives structure shows stages and progressiveness; the content is very rich, and the organization is reasonable, which embody the principle of selecting curriculum content based on the society, discipline and students themselves.The third Chapter analyzes the background and essence of economic education in the U.S. from the social and cultural background, economic theory and curriculum environment:The development of economic education is closely related to the changes of the U.S.'s position in the world, and be driven by the competition tradition of American; Western classical economic theories are the main basis for economic education; Economic Education is implemented through the Social Studies, and in turn it also promotes the development of social studies; Economic Education is essential for civic education.The fourth Chapter describes the historic development of economic education in China, analyzes the economic education in primary school of China, and presents some suggestions for promoting its development.
