This study intends to explore possible advantages of dictation methods in practice to improve students'proficiency English level. In the age of "post-method", many new teaching strategies have appeared in the TEFL. As a traditional instruction method, dictation has been widely used by many teachers of English in China to encourage learners to memorize words and phrases. This study is to prove the effectiveness of dictation in senior English teaching practice. The author tries to integrate dictation methods and teaching practice, and conduct summary dictation in the course of classroom teaching. For example, students are required to dictate words, phrases and important sentences in the academic sessions; there are only five difficult words, ten important phrases and five sentences in each dictation; the teacher and students have got dictation once or at most twice every unit.To test the effectiveness of dictation method, the author conducted an experiment in the study. Two classes of senior three students participated in the experiment to form the experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). Some variable factors were used between pre-test and post-test to investigate whether the subjects in EG are more effective in learning; and a questionnaire was designed to find whether the subjects like summary dictation and the relationship between the frequency of dictation and students'English proficiency. The author analyzed the data of the experiment and made some comments on the results.The experimental results show that summary dictation strategy had great effects on students'comprehensive English proficiency; the EG made significant progress on their learning. The results of the questionnaires show the subjects like summary dictation rather random dictation, and most of them believe dictation strategy helps a lot. The author is sure that this study is of theoretical and practical effect.
