In the past few decades in China, there have been a lot of heated discussions on the Grammar Translation Method and the Communicative Approach in English language teaching. The former is traditionally examination-oriented, focusing on language form but ignoring the development of students'communicative competence. The latter is more concerned with the meaning and function in language communication but tends to neglect form and grammar. Whether the understanding of teaching is "more grammar and less communication" or "less grammar and more communication", the one-sided notion will inevitably weaken the effectiveness of EFL teaching in China. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to seek ways to explore how to improve students'communicative competence in junior English grammar teaching.Based on the status quo of English grammar teaching and students'communicative competence, this paper illustrates the features and importance of grammar teaching and communicative language teaching and the necessity of integrating them. The focus of the paper is to enable students to apply their grammatical knowledge to language communication with a view to promoting their further understanding of grammar and the abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing. This paper, as shown in the literature review, first analyzes the theories of grammar teaching and communicative language teaching and tries to construct the theoretical framework of the research. Some surveys and questionnaires have also been made to further discover the problems in junior English grammar teaching. Then, on the basis of theoretical guidance and case studies, this paper puts forward some principles on how to integrate grammar with communication. Finally, these principles are tested in the teaching process with the help of SPSS software for statistical analysis.Based on the theoretical studies, questionnaires, data analyses and teaching cases, the paper comes to the conclusion that grammar teaching and communicative competence are equally important. Only in this way, can students apply their grammatical knowledge to real communication. Therefore the integration between grammar and communication can ultimately improve students'ability to use the language and this is quite significant in their life-long learning and personal development. |
