This study attempts to classify and process the volleyball related research papers published in China's core sports journals in recent years by means of literature metrology. Meanwhile, the study attempts to analyze the present situation of development on volleyball sports in China and its characteristics through an analysis of data distribution and its correlation. The subject of study is about 367 pieces of thesis on volleyball research published in China's core journals of sports in different periodicals and 2737 pieces of quotations from the year 2003 to 2008. the core journals in this paper refers to the core journals listed on Beijing University Library and The general Glossary of China's Core Journals co-compiled by Beijing University Library and the Research Board of Periodical Work of Institution of Higher Learning, which has been published for four times since 2008. the search of the relevant information is subject to specific editions because of the minor changes in each edition. The sample data comes from www. CNKI.net.Result & Conclusion:1. A brief analysis of the volleyball related research papers published in China's core sports journals from 2003—2008: There are fluctuations in the quantity in topic selection, with a peak in 2004 and progressive decrease ever since then. The study on women volleyball team prevails those of men volleyball team; there are fewer studies taken foreign volleyball teams as subjects of study. In addition, there are comparatively more studies on college students and fewer studies on young people and older people.2. The main problems of the volleyball related research papers published in China's core sports journals from 2003—2008 are as follows: The topic selection is unevenly distributed and many of them repeated; the content of the selected topics lacks depth and the idea of creativity; the range of the topic selection is too wide and the topics lack clarity; there are more studies on proof, while fewer studies on argumentation; there are more studies on macroscopic study on the present situation, and this contributes to the mismatch theory with practice.3. There are lower non-major quotations in terms of the research on volleyball sports, which cover only 112 pieces, accounting for 4% of the total, of which 54.4% are focused on the quotation of textbooks, a striking contrast to Bradford, who quotes 1/3 of his quotations from non-major sources.4. There are a comparative wide range of the types of the volleyball related research papers published in China, of which, the quotation rate by periodicals account for 61.48%, and the distribution of the quotation type is in accordance with the effectiveness of time in literature metrology.5. Of the 94.4% of the language used by the quotation, the quotation in foreign languages account for only 5.6%, among which 88.8% are in English. This indicates that the choice of language by the researchers in China is much limited, with a focus on the use of native language.6. The age range of researchers are from 36 years old to 45 years old in 2003—2008, and the researchers tend to be with high academic record and are youth oriented.7. Of the research papers using the world- famous athletes as their subject of study, only about 16.9% of data collection adopt the actual testing method, the other data collection originates from the secondary literature; for athletes at the national levels, 76.2% of the data source comes from actual testing and for athletes at other levels, 93.7% of data source comes from actual testing.
